The Scoop: Goil, Tom, Marley and Lily

Goil Amornvivat and Thomas Morbitzer of TUG Studio are two of my favorite people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and working with. These talented designers both hold Masters Degrees in Architecture from Yale and, when they’re not busy designing dream residential and commercial spaces for their TUG Studio clients, they’re spoiling their dogs Marley and Lily (whom I’ve had the great pleasure of snuggling with)! Let’s meet the canine influencers behind this talented duo, shall we?

Names? Marley (we adopted him as Bob Marley but now he is Marley Morbitzer at the vet’s office) and Lily (we named her “Lil Lily Munster”).

Nicknames? Marley: Mumu, Shamu, Panda. Lily: Lilu, Lillers, Dark Cloud. Together they are “Larly”. We also call Lily, “Bitch Pudding” (from Robot Chicken, BLAM!).

Ages? Lily is five and Marley is six.

Breeds? French Bulldogs

What’s “The Scoop”? We adopted Marley off Craiglist. We were his 4th owners and he was only 1 year old. The last owner really loved him and made sure that he was adopted into a good home. We were the first people who called and didn’t just ask “How much?”. We told her that we live next to a park and so Marley came to live with us. He had a lot of separation anxiety. Our dog walker Bob told us that Marley needed a “job”, so we adopted Lily from a farm in Ohio (yes she is a farm girl), and Marley helped us raised Lily. She was potty trained like in the first month. And now they are inseparable; she is his little shadow!

Favorite Toy? Marley came with one tentacle of an octopus toy. (So we knew he must have chewed off and ate the other 7!) He is easy to please! At PS9, the pet store in our hood, he sits and his mouth will quiver when he sees something he LOVES… that means we have to buy it. Currently, he has about 40 toys that he will individually move out of his toy box when we have a visitor! (He’s a real show off!) His favorite is a plastic super-sized ball we got at Fab.com, he plays with it on our porch. He really gets into it and because the ball is plastic, it breaks our planters! But we have no choice… It seems to make him VERY happy. What can you do?

Lily doesn’t have any toys. Zero. But she is the boss of us. She doesn’t know how to play fetch, because Marley is too awesome at fetch. Lily instead ‘fetches’ his back legs (re: she tries to chew his hind legs off as he is playing fetch), so her favorite game is “running interference.” I suppose HE is her one toy!

Favorite Food? Marley will eat everything and quickly, like he has never seen food. Don’t be fooled, we actually feed him A LOT and ALL the time. Lily loves cheese. Our friend Keith gave her some cheese at Tom’s birthday party and now she gets super excited to see him, jumps up and sits on his lap and tries to push him down with her body weight so that he won’t leave! Poor girl, looking for love in all the wrong places. Other than the love for Marley, she loves cheese and loves to lick at Keith’s face. Keith likes that too, but she doesn’t know that Keith is already taken.

Favorite place to sleep? Well, Marley was in a Iams commercial! And yes I was a show biz dad. The producer didn’t have to say jump; I had already asked “How high?”! I drove him over two bridges, 2 hours each way, to NJ for the 3 day shoot! (No complaints here.) With his earnings, Marley bought us a new couch. We call it the “Marley couch”. And that’s their favorite place to sleep. Because the Marley couch can be vast, these two also love to cuddle together on the Saarinen womb chair when it’s cold, which is how we know to turn up the heat. Otherwise, at the office, Lily sleeps behind me on a Herman Miller.

Pet Peeves? Lily gets jealous and we can’t pet another dog on the street, she will start to bark in that “alert, danger!” sort of way. I suppose as a breed, French Bulldogs have no real function. They weren’t bred to dig a hole or fetch hunted animals, etc. but they are bred to be “best friends” and Lily takes her job VERY seriously.

Best Trick? I feel like “being cute” is their only trick. Lily is midnight black and sometimes we can’t find her in the house at night… her special power is the power of invisibility!

Gear? We get everything from our local pet shop PS9 and on our friend Bradford’s site Fab.com.

If your dogs were another animal what animal would they be? Lily would be a rabbit. Marley would be a person, an athlete probably (did we mention he really likes to play fetch?). He is scary-smart and when we had work done on the house he literally sat next to the builder and watched what they did. It was cute… then creepy.

Your tagline at TUG Studio is “Serious. Fun.” — between Marley and Lily, is one more serious or silly than the other? LOL. Yes Marley is serious about his fun. And Lily… she is more funny than fun. Well either way, everyone who sees these dogs on the street walks away with a grin!

Thanks Goil, Tom, Lily, and Marley!

Capree has a deep love of Victorian-era “fancy lads”, 19th Century anatomy drawings, and tin robots. She loves big, bold colors and big, bold patterns. Oh, and anything well-designed, especially if it’s something she can sit in.
