The Scoop: Rebecca Lonergan and Roxy

Rebecca Lonergan, along with her husband David Bousfield, started Modwalls Tile Company in 2005. Inspired by their frustrations in finding well-made, modern, colorful, and available tile for their own home remodels, they decided to design the tile they craved. Rebecca is also the company’s CEO and creative director. She’s been hard at work expanding the brand via design partnerships such as Rex Ray Studio, Henry Road, and Atomic Ranch magazine. Modwalls‘ current focus is creating tile collections that are 100% American made, which is something I am ALL for.

I’ve been a big fan of their modern, Mid-Century-inspired aesthetic and incredibly colorful products for a number of years. Real talk: I check out Modwalls on a regular basis for design, decor, and color inspiration. I also love following Rebecca and Modwalls on Instagram, which is where I first spotted their adorable dog Roxy. Of course, I had to find out more about this sweet pup. Read on to get the Scoop on Roxy!

What’s “The Scoop”? We had always been a boxer family. It had been 2 years since we’d had a dog and last summer we decided that it was time to adopt another. The boxer rescue didn’t have any dogs available in our area, so we decided to check out our local Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. When we walked in, Roxy was leaning against her cage and began wagging her tail as soon as my (then) 9-year-old twin boys approached. We all fell instantly in love.

After playing with her in the yard there, we found out that two other people had put a day hold on her. It was likely that she’d be adopted by one of them in the next few hours. We added ourselves to the list and 30 minutes before the shelter closed that day we got the call that the other two people had dropped out and she was ours. We learned that she had been owned by a man who had recently died and she was grieving. We had also suffered the loss of a close family member last year. We knew that this was meant to be.

Favorite Toy? A small pillow that my mother-in-law gave her. It is embroidered with “Maps to the Stars’ Dog Houses”. She gingerly carries it around throughout the day. She also loves a stuffed ring toy that we use to play fetch, and a Kong we fill with peanut butter and dog treats.

Favorite Food? Roxy eats Wellness Complete dry dog food. She also enjoys apple slices and steamed broccoli on occasion.

Favorite place to sleep? She sleeps in her crate in our bedroom. I often let her out early in the morning to sleep on our bed for that last hour or two before sunrise. It helps both of us sleep better.

Pet Peeves? She hates the rain. For a strong and agile “mountain dog” she is very delicate when it comes to the rain and refuses to go outside. She also gets annoyed by my boys’ radio controlled cars and the vacuum cleaner.

Best Trick? Leaping 4 feet up onto our trampoline and then jumping around on it with the boys.

Gear? Roxy loves her Thunder Shirt, especially when it’s raining outside. I think it’s like wearing a hug.

If your dog were another animal what animal would that be? She’d be a gazelle or a cheetah: fast, agile, and elegant.

If Roxy could make her own tile blend, what colors would she use? Of course she would use our online Brio glass mosaic tile blender to create a design that matches her gorgeous white and brindle coat. The recipe would be: 40% Soft White and 20% each of Funkytown Shimmer, Copperopolis Shimmer, and The Heights Shimmer:

Capree has a deep love of Victorian-era “fancy lads”, 19th Century anatomy drawings, and tin robots. She loves big, bold colors and big, bold patterns. Oh, and anything well-designed, especially if it’s something she can sit in.
