Venini’s Latest Artist Collection Is UNITY by Marc Thorpe

Venini’s latest artist collection is by New York-based designer Marc Thorpe. The series – UNITY – is made up of ten vessels that will debut at Les Ateliers Courbet’s New York gallery March 7 from 6pm to 8pm. The collection as a whole makes note of Thorpe’s interest in the ways cultural confluences and global culture heritage have the power to bring us all together.

To create UNITY, Thorpe introduced Italian glass manufacturer Venini to weaver artisans in Dakar, Senegal. The two worked together to create the vessels that are created from pieces that each made, using two materials and two honored techniques. Both parts – a woven base and faceted glass top of the same color created using the Battuto technique – nest together in a very fluid way. In fact, the vessels’ silhouettes could easily represent a traditional African headrest or Italy’s Memphis design, making this a true success.
