If nothing else, the past year plus has given us all a newfound appreciation of the outdoors. Inside~Out in the Garden is a newly opened outdoor design show that’s part of NYCxDesign’s Design Days curated by Kin & Company. The show explores the role of outdoor design in human interaction in the post-pandemic world through the works of 22 American designers. Their fresh ideas offer up some much needed optimism for rebuilding human connection.
Kin & Company’s second annual outdoor design exhibition is being hosted in the garden and gallery of new residential development Saint Marks Place, designed by INC Architecture and located in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. This year’s show brings to life works that were initially conceptualized as part of a virtual presentation that examined creative expression during the pandemic. Furniture and sculptures were created by more than 20 independent design studios and emerging talent, including: Charles Osawa, Daniel Michalik, Evan Z. Crane, Ford Bostwick, Kyle May and Lauren Hunter, Maryam Turkey, Micah Rosenblatt, Walter Mingledorff, Yuko Nishikawa, Humble Matter, Bjarke Ballisager, Arcana, Bailey Fontaine, Gregory Beson, Kickie Chudikova, Kin & Company, Liz Collins and Likeminded Objects, Malcolm Majer, Naomi Clark, Sarah Sears, Sebastián Arroyo Hoebens and Elena Boils, Teruko Kushi, Trey Jones Studio, Creteur, J McDonald and Erickson Aesthetics. The show will be on exhibit through June 24th, 2021.
2019’s inaugural Inside~Out focused on bringing the work of the American design scene to the outdoor space. The outdoor furniture market had been largely overlooked by the independent design community and many designers were excited to fill the void by participating in the first and only NYCxDESIGN show to feature exclusively outdoor work. Since then, people have discovered more ways to lead a life that is lived largely outside. Inside~Out in the Garden expresses the designers’ cautious optimism and a look at a time when we will be together again.
