SHSH Architecture + Scenography took an old storage warehouse in Brussels and turned one floor of it into a modern loft with an art studio for a family with three children. Working with a limited budget, their goal was to incorporate plenty of textures and colors, as well as architectural details and a blend of the old with the new. Plus, there’s a swing!
The design team was inspired by the ocean since the loft itself was so large. Within that large, open space, they planned three, island-like volumes to house the bedrooms, the kitchen, and the bathrooms. The three separate “islands” were designed with different textures and colors, and were placed against the walls to leave a large open space near the windows.
The bedroom volume is clad in wood and has built-in bookshelves and closets for storage.
The master bedroom is housed behind sliding glass doors that benefit from the office’s workspace’s windows.
A massive bookcase was built during the second phase of construction to accommodate the family’s changing needs. They shelves now disguise a new bedroom for one of the children.
The green volume houses the kitchen and laundry room in a dull green color. Beyond that, the red tone references the bathroom and technical room.
