Swedish design studio Claesson Koivisto Rune (CKR) created a collection of wicker lamps for the Made in Mimbre line by The Andes House. CKR observed and were impressed by the success of the company’s ability to create and manufacture their beautiful lighting locally in Chile and saw how they utilize local artisans to produce the objects while also helping to preserve their wicker weaving techniques. Eager to collaborate, the team designed three lamps with Spanish names to honor the manufacturer’s origins: MEDUSA, CHINITA, and BELLOTA.
The lamps launched at designjunction during the 2013 London Design Festival.
The MEDUSA lamps have oval-shaped lampshades that appear to balance on thin, spindly legs. Instead of trimming the excess bits of wicker that normally happens, CKR decided to keep them, allowing them to hide three, thin metal legs to help support the light. The finished product is reminiscent of a jellyfish that’s floating.
The CHINITA lamps look as if the four ‘feet’ have been stretched from the bottom of the fixture giving them a cute, creature-like appearance – almost like friendly bugs.
The BELLOTA suspension lamps feature two similar forms that are joined to create one structure with a definitive division between the two. Once again taking inspiration from nature, the shape mimics that of an acorn.
