The modern recipe is here: aluminum (or steel) + glass on top of hardwood floors, a neutral palette of colors with some accent walls painted in bright and contrasting tones = winner! Designed by 1100 Architect.

Eliminating boundaries by integrating the exterior and interior spaces and tons of light pouring through. The only change I would do, is to get rid of the ugly Dell PC and put a Mac. It’s a better match to a Tolomeo…

A house from a parallel world where the energy crisis has been solved. The recipe here is extreme heat loss and gain, inefficient incandescent lighting, off-the-charts energy bills and a life sentence in the climate clink. The kitchen, being all windows, appears to need mechanised air conditioning to offest the heat gain. We can’t build this way any more. In UK, literally so: I don’t think you’d be allowed to build this. The Dell is the least of the problems.

Bashing the Dell is tacky. Macs are nice computers, sure, but they have aspects they excel at, as do PCs. I use a PC because that’s what my clients need and use. Does that mean you’re going to criticize me? Pah. Too much advertising + only mid-level content + unwarranted superiority complex = first and last visit.

What a bunch of whiners.

I think it’s beautiful. Not sure about the orange sinks though – would have gone with something black or dark brown.

OK, so is this a place to debate the energy efficiency, or a place to marvel at some elegant, clean contemporary design. Im guessing the latter. Of course nobody is going to actually have a home like this (or if they do, only a very select few), but it is a look for the rest of us to aspire to. Stop whining, start admiring good work when you see it.

All of the comments are valid. We can both admire (or criticize) the aesthetics, and we can certainly call out bad design. Energy efficiency is part of design.

I love this project… There’s a lot more to the story, it was in Architectural Digest October ’07.

I find this to be a wonderful living space. Love the openness and the splashes of color against a city background…..

Ice cold! Isn’t it possible to look modern without looking so cold and uninviting?
