A Cabinet with Gradient Layered Shingles

For their final project in furniture design at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang in Thailand, students Jumphol Socharoentham and Pakawat Vijaykadga designed the ALATO CABINET with a focus on wood and craftsmanship.

The prominent feature of the piece is the layered doors where the pair used feathers for inspiration. Weaving ash veneer through vertical wooden rods, a shingle effect begins to take shape. To play up the layered look, they sprayed the veneer with paint in different intensities, which resulted in a bold, gradient finish, much like fish scales.
