The California Roll House is a futuristic concept design for a prefabricated house that Christopher Daniel of Violent Volumes has created. The house was designed with a desert setting in mind with its exterior wrapped in an energy-efficient material that reflects heat from the sun. The house appears rolled to form a tube-like shape with glass on either end that is controlled electronically to change the transparency for privacy and light control. The modular nature of the design makes for easy assembly and disassembly on site.

To maximize space, doors are hydraulically powered and curtains provide privacy as a space divider in the bedroom.

The interior design is fairly minimal which allows for open, light-filled spaces.

“To maximize space, doors are hydraulically powered”
HAHAHAHAHAHA come on come on come on… this is a GIANT joke right? look at the MASSIVE amounts of wasted space thanks to the curves of the floors joining the walls. I understand, it’s a 3D CONCEPT at best, but this is laughable in sooo many ways.
Yet another designer who come up with pie-in-the-sky concepts without ever taking into account structural integrity. Please, explain to me how this is going to stay standing up on just a stairwell at the entry.
Hydraulic doors…. HAHAHA this is too funny.

Well I think it’s absolutely fantastic. Really captures the imagination, and the desert setting is just great… And yes I would live here :-)

So Creative.

I am not so sure about this design. Hydraulic doors are another expensive fix if things go wrong. Giant glass offers little privacy and there are not enough smaller windows on the lower level. And are those tension wires holding it together? I did not see a price?

I love CONCEPTS. I also love science fiction and perpetual motion. Show me a prototype and i’ll get excited — otherwise its just some kid with an imagination and photoshop.
