Friday Five with Fleetwood Fernandez Architects

Hunter Fleetwood and Paz Fernandez are the architects behind Fleetwood Fernandez Architects, a creative studio based in downtown Los Angeles. Since 2008, the husband and wife team have been working on residential, corporate, and commercial projects, all of which are designed to hit on an emotional level with those that use or live in them. Their collaborative nature resonates with clients on all levels leading to successful projects all around, including one that was recently featured in Dwell. Here, Hunter and Paz give us insight into what keeps their creativity flowing in this week’s Friday Five.

1. Cala Deia
This little hidden cove on the west coast of Majorca, Spain is our most favorite place, not only because Paz was born on the island or because we got married nearby, but mainly because it’s the one place that continuously inspires and invigorates us. We try to visit once a year and consider a swim in the clear warm Mediterranean or a lunch on the rocks at Ca’s Patró Marche the ultimate definition of happiness.

2. Our library
We are both avid readers and have great appreciation for our amassed shelves of books. We did break down and purchase a Kindle a while back, but there is still nothing like spending a lazy Sunday on the couch or on the beach with printed words on paper pages. The quest for the perfect story is a happy constant in our lives.

3. Vija Celmins
What can we say about Vija Celmins. Her haunting drawings are nothing short of breathtaking. When we are looking for inspiration we look to her ocean drawing series. Her drawings focus in on detailed elements found in nature and capture a contemplative feeling that we feel encapsulates the very same spirit we aim to attain in our projects.

4. Pencils
We have been drawing with pencils since architecture school (okay, in reality since we were toddlers) and always have dozens in various colors and lead types lying around the studio. Rotring is one brand of mechanical pencils that fills our pencil holders and we think they are the perfect tools of our trade.

5. Reina
Our 11 year old Wheaten Terrier is not only the most popular employee in our office but she is the ideal daily partner. We could go on and on about how perfect and loving and silly and loyal she is or how we would seize to function without her but that would make us sound like those doting dog parents your friends and neighbors warn you about. SO, let’s just say we adore our fur ball Reina and yes, dogs rule!
