Designer Desktops: February 2012

February’s Designer Desktop is a quote by Nolan Bushnell: “The ultimate inspiration is the deadline” as illustrated by designer Burcu B. Koken. If you don’t know (I didn’t), Bushnell is inventor of Pong and founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese chain restaurants.

Designer Desktops: December 2011

I’m so excited to close out this year’s series of monthly Designer Desktop with Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles for Good Design, as illustrated by Aaron Wood, maker of those infamous Social Media Propaganda Posters that were so popular this year. Aaron says, “I’m a huge fan of good, clean, simple (and functional) design. Dieter Rams was also a huge proponent of this. Choosing his ten principles of design was a no-brainer, since it really reflects on a lot of what I believe in as well.”

Designer Desktops: November 2011

This month’s Designer Desktop comes from Henry Madsen of Helmetgirl illustration and design. Henry explains, “Pieces of art, for me, are windows into a parallel world of beauty, magic, abstraction and inspiration. So I often find that if I allow myself to observe a piece of art — be it in a gallery, on the street or just a natural work of beauty — a little bit of that other world will spill over and brighten up my day.”

Designer Desktops: October 2011

Designer Desktops: October 2011

This month’s Designer Desktop comes from H. Michael Karshis who chose a quote from Tibor Kalman, “Everything is an experiment.”

Karshis explains:

To me, it wasn’t the actual work of Tibor Kalman that inspired me, it was more about his approach and methodology, his very personal “how and why” thinking regarding his use of images and words within the actual finished work. As a designer and artist I simply loved the fact that Tibor was never afraid to share or express what he really thought. Although sometimes shocking to the point of pissing people off with his blunt choice of images and words, there was always an element of humor, thoughtfulness and a sense that he was always being true to himself and never afraid to say what was he really believed.

Although he left us when he was only 49, I always got the feeling through his direct and blatant personality that he’d somehow seen and done all of this before and his mission here was to remind us all that life is short and design should be used as a means for a philanthropic endeavor or greater cause.

And as far as I’m concerned and from everything I’ve read and seen from the man, he understood how lucky and loved he was and at every opportunity proved he was as real deal, generous and down to earth as they come. I mean, what’s not to like about a man that was known to order a pizza during formal design conference presentations?

Designer Desktops: September 2011

I can’t believe it’s September already. Back to school time. I love the Fall – I can’t wait to wear cardigans and drink pumpkin spice lattes. This month’s Designer Desktop comes from illustrator Gemma Correll, whose work we’ve featured in our Design Milk Dairy Society6 collection.

Designer Desktops: August 2011

Designer Desktops: August 2011

This month’s Designer Desktop was designed by Jessica Wright. She chose to illustrate a very interesting quote from Milton Glaser: “Computers are to design as microwaves are to cooking.”

Jessica says of her design:

I chose this quote not only because I’m a Milton Glaser fan but, because it is interesting to think about the meaning behind it and if any designers today still have this sentiment. Are computers merely an appliance to warm up and finish out concepts that are cooked beforehand? Or has the computer become apart of the creative process in such a way that without it, the vastness of design may not be where it is today? Deep thoughts!

Designer Desktops: July 2011

Designer Desktops: July 2011

July’s Designer Desktop is inspired by a quote from Coco Chanel (she was just full of wit and wisdom, no?) Designed by Allison and Craig Glancey of Strawberry Luna, the design reminds me of the opening of a French film from the 1970s.

Allison and Craig on their design:

Sometimes when you go looking for inspiration, you cannot find it in the usual places. In fact, we notice that inspiration often comes from surprising little corners of a day. While looking through more traditional design quotes, it was hard to find one that fit nicely. Reading through random quotations, we kept seeing gems from Coco Chanel. While she was certainly a designer, we tend to think of her work and legacy in the narrow terms of fashion only. Realistically, that’s unfair given Chanel’s extreme and indelible effect on design across multiple platforms in the modern era. Her quotes are lively, fresh, graphically interesting and as carefully composed as the objects she created. This quote in particular appealed to us for the stylish and visually crisp way of stating the importance of one’s self or one’s work being perfectly self-sufficient. And of the opportunity to create a man’s suit from mere stacked words? C’est parfait!

Designer Desktops: June 2011

Designer Desktops: June 2011

The Designer Desktop for June is a bit of a departure from what we’ve had in the past. But, I’m sure you will love it nonetheless. Designed by Orlando artist, designer and blogger Jason Dean of The Best Part, I’m sure many of you in your 20s-40s will remember how popular this song by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock was (and still is). Whenever I hear it on the radio, I always crank it up and sing along.

Jason explains his design:

Given the task of designing a wallpaper for the month of June, I decided to use the month itself as inspiration and go from there. For me, June represents the beginning of summer and the good times of my youth. Summer days spent at the local community pool and the music of the late 80′s and early 90′s especially comes to mind, so I took a bit of a departure from my usual serious minimal style, using this opportunity to have some fun and be a kid again!
