I let out a little squeak of joy when Matt W. Moore agreed to design a desktop for our Designer Desktop series. How did I know he’d do something absolutely perfect?

April’s Designer Desktop is a Chinese proverb that artist Rafa Jenn has illustrated and interpreted as “A bird [An artist] doesn’t sing [create] because it has an answer, it sings [creates] because it [he/she] has a song.”

March’s Designer Desktop is a quote by Coco Chanel: “Success is often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable,” as illustrated by designer Alia Ormut – Fleishman. In the design she incorporated decorative designed typography and imagery inspired by Chanel iconography, but with a modernized illustrated twist.

February’s Designer Desktop is a quote by Nolan Bushnell: “The ultimate inspiration is the deadline” as illustrated by designer Burcu B. Koken. If you don’t know (I didn’t), Bushnell is inventor of Pong and founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese chain restaurants.

Opening this year’s monthly Designer Desktop series is Anthony Zinonos, who illustrated a quote by Nicholas Burroughs:
“Minimalism is not a lack of something, it’s simply the perfect amount of something.”

I’m so excited to close out this year’s series of monthly Designer Desktop with Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles for Good Design, as illustrated by Aaron Wood, maker of those infamous Social Media Propaganda Posters that were so popular this year. Aaron says, “I’m a huge fan of good, clean, simple (and functional) design. Dieter Rams was also a huge proponent of this. Choosing his ten principles of design was a no-brainer, since it really reflects on a lot of what I believe in as well.”

This month’s Designer Desktop comes from Henry Madsen of Helmetgirl illustration and design. Henry explains, “Pieces of art, for me, are windows into a parallel world of beauty, magic, abstraction and inspiration. So I often find that if I allow myself to observe a piece of art — be it in a gallery, on the street or just a natural work of beauty — a little bit of that other world will spill over and brighten up my day.”

This month’s Designer Desktop comes from H. Michael Karshis who chose a quote from Tibor Kalman, “Everything is an experiment.”
Karshis explains:
To me, it wasn’t the actual work of Tibor Kalman that inspired me, it was more about his approach and methodology, his very personal “how and why” thinking regarding his use of images and words within the actual finished work. As a designer and artist I simply loved the fact that Tibor was never afraid to share or express what he really thought. Although sometimes shocking to the point of pissing people off with his blunt choice of images and words, there was always an element of humor, thoughtfulness and a sense that he was always being true to himself and never afraid to say what was he really believed.
Although he left us when he was only 49, I always got the feeling through his direct and blatant personality that he’d somehow seen and done all of this before and his mission here was to remind us all that life is short and design should be used as a means for a philanthropic endeavor or greater cause.
And as far as I’m concerned and from everything I’ve read and seen from the man, he understood how lucky and loved he was and at every opportunity proved he was as real deal, generous and down to earth as they come. I mean, what’s not to like about a man that was known to order a pizza during formal design conference presentations?

I can’t believe it’s September already. Back to school time. I love the Fall – I can’t wait to wear cardigans and drink pumpkin spice lattes. This month’s Designer Desktop comes from illustrator Gemma Correll, whose work we’ve featured in our Design Milk Dairy Society6 collection.
