I still remember my childhood bedroom, with its green shag carpet and oversize floral wallpaper—on the ceiling. Yes, I was a child of the seventies. My parents actually put quite a bit of effort into the space, though I’m not sure that was the norm. These days, children’s rooms range from princess fairylands to sports dens that would make LeBron James weep. I prefer my spaces not so theme-y. Here are a dozen fresh kids’ rooms, including colorful contemporary bedrooms and black and white Scandinavian style spaces.
Above: An urban oasis fit for a kid designed by Jarlath Mellett.
Clean-lined built-in bunks, complete with curtain, blend white and wood for a look that’s right now in Chicago. Architecture by Vinci Hamp and interior design by Stephanie Wohlner.
New York City-based interior design firm Chango & Co. implement a bold scheme of Kelly green chalkboard paint and chartreuse stripes, accented with, of all colors, red. It works!
This perfect Scandinavian home, belonging to stylist Emma Persson Lagerberg was featured in Swedish Elle Interior. The white walls, furniture, and painted floors show off a mix of pillows, artwork, and, of course, toys.
Susanna Cots, whose interior design studio is based in Barcelona, conceived this ingenious two-level space with a raised bed under which is tucked a dresser and pull-out desk. Fun and functional for sure.
IKEA’s STUVA storage benches topped with cushions, as seen in this image from Finland’s Evening magazine, are perfect in a kid’s room.
A rainbow of pencils border the the top and bottom of a wall and an upside down bucket is a lampshade in this fun teen’s room designed by Neslihan Pekcan of Istanbul-based Pebble Design.
Apartment Therapy featured this bedroom in Oakland, California which belongs to a little boy named Arden. The polka dot walls were created with file folder stickers!
A recycled timber flooring wall with plasterboard tree lends a rustic, tree-house feel to this otherwise contemporary kid’s room in Australia designed by Sydney-based Capital Building.
Wood furniture with clean lines, polka dot bedding, and a wall map decorated with a multicolor garland come together to create a not-too-sweet children’s bedroom in Western Australia. Styled by Perth-based Anna Flanders for The Design Files.
Ok, so who else out there had a trapeze in their room growing up? We thought so. This Scandinavian kids room with painted white floor and touches of black appeared in DEKO.
What’s black and white with primary pops all over? Those trees that look to be right out of The Lorax. It belongs to the son of Klara Ripa, the mom behind Swedish lifestyle blog Pippivogel.

I’m really loving the idea of using patterns to create oversize murals, as in the first picture. The link is broken…you have to scroll for the picture on the project page: http://www.jarlathmellett.com/?page_id=173&page=9
You can buy the custom wallcovering according to his site, too. $14.95 sf at least when I looked this up.
I came across a pattern wall of a world map used in a kid’s room yesterday. There were no links to the original image, so I don’t know the detailed info. The idea is wonderful!
