Union Wharf: A Waterside Home in London Inspired by Canal Boats

Nicholas Szczepaniak Architects and Blue Engineering completed a project in London along Regent’s Canal that included a renovation and an extension of a family home. Now, Union Wharf is a minimalist home located within a converted factory building complete with a rooftop conservatory that can be used all year long.

The date space wasn’t working for the couple who were looking for a more contemporary feel that was both spacious and energy efficient. The interior, which spans three floors, received a full renovation that included taking an unused storage room and turning it into a rooftop room with an outdoor terrace.

To keep costs down, they used reasonably priced materials while filling in design-focused details for added value.

The new rooftop space can be used for most anything, like a guest suite, lounge, or study, and its oak and ash design was inspired by canal boats in the water. Three large custom windows frame the view, while vertically hung steel cables help filter the light.

The main living space on the ground floor was given a new layout to open up and connect the kitchen, dining, and seating areas.

A sliding glass wall disguises the new playroom when they want it out of sight.
