Alaska Alaska + CALIPER’s AA67 Speaker Puts Design at Full Volume

Some speakers are designed to blend in – this one turns heads before it plays a note. Designed by Virgil Abloh-founded design studio Alaska Alaska and produced by CALIPER, the AA67 Speaker was inspired by, not music, but architecture: a kiosk introduced in 1966 by Slovenian architect and designer Saša Mächtig. Channeling the same bold geometry and modular spirit, Alaska Alaska has reimagined the iconic K67 kiosk form as a limited-edition bookshelf speaker that’s equal parts high-fidelity sound and collectible design.

Since its inception, Alaska Alaska has made a habit of blurring the lines between design, culture, and relevance. The studio questions what design can be – while also, in their own words, “designing Design.” Since 2022, creative directors Tawanda Chiweshe and Francisco Gaspar have been steering the ship, reimagining iconic forms and giving them a fresh spin for today’s cultural landscape.

That spirit of reimagination made CALIPER a natural collaborator. Based in Madrid, the industrial design and fabrication studio is known for bridging the gap between big ideas and real-world production. Through its Editions Programme – a platform for projects that might never leave the drawing board due to technical, contextual, or financial constraints – CALIPER acts as commissioner, fabricator, and retailer. The AA67 Speaker marks the ninth installment in the series, bringing Alaska Alaska’s vision from concept to collectible reality.

The AA67 Speaker takes Mächtig’s K67 Kiosk and scales it down to bookshelf size without losing any of its presence. The speaker is part of a larger collection that includes a speaker shelf, sofa, table, bench, and shelving unit that exemplifies Alaska Alaska’s knack for reframing and recontextualizing design icons for today’s cultural landscape. Available in eight saturated shades – blue, grey, orange, white, pink, green, black, and grape – each one is made to order and sold exclusively through the CALIPER store. Measuring 41 x 41 x 37 cm, the AA67 is constructed from fiberglass with interior geopannel insulation, an 8-inch cast aluminum chassis with coaxial driver, stainless steel hardware, and a sleek anodized aluminum plaque. With only 25 speakers produced, the AA67 is as much a collectible object as it is a sound system.

Amped up in sound and design, the AA67 transforms a functional object into a bold statement. Designed to be seen and heard, it’s anything but background noise.
