Ever wish you could try out furniture in your home before you buy it? Ever wonder how it will look or if it will even fit in the space? Well, with the 2014 IKEA catalog, you can do just that. The Swedish furniture giants let you “sample” a selection of their designs (about 90) with the help of an augmented reality (AR) app (iOS or Android), so you can see how they would look in your own home.
Watch the video to see the app in action:
Download the new IKEA catalog app to your smartphone or tablet and one of the new features is augmented reality so you can view your room in 360º/180º degrees using the device sensors. You simply place the catalog in the room you want to decorate, which helps to set the scale. You can then select items you want to virtually add to the room and they appear at the correct size so you can get an idea of how they’d look.

Has this app finally launched doing what it promised? I don’t seem to find the AR, only videos and 360 views…

At the moment, the barrier that stands between the user and the AR content is whether or not to download the app. If the ad is exciting enough and promises exclusive, relevant content, there is a good chance the user will download and scan because statistics predicts that by 2018 the Augmented Reality market would exceed $1 billion.
