Muller Van Severen Bridges Art + Furniture for Milan Design Week

If your eyes track downwards while checking out the Bridges collection, you’re not alone. Presented at Milan Design Week 2024, the series of cabinets designed by Belgian studio Muller Van Severen for Barcelona Design seem almost surreal, like an AI-generated image superimposed onto real life. Instead of legs or a typical rectangular base, the volumes are supported by three distinct sculptural bottoms that resemble bridges, elevating the units and creating room for light to flow through in a way rarely seen in furniture.

Each piece occupies the same footprint but varies in height and bridge style. The monolithic expression of the cabinets allows them to be used as pedestals or sculptures instead of merely functional cabinets. By challenging the idea of what a cabinet is supposed to look like, Muller Van Severen turns furniture into artful objects worthy of gallery space.

The design studio also updated the peculiar Pillow sofa, which was initially designed for KASSL Editions. The original version wasn’t modular, but for Barcelona Design, the renewed design allows for the cushions to be mixed and matched as an expression of style to coordinate with any environment. From one seaters to longer configurations, the Pillow invites you to delightfully plop down on one of its plush cushions and stay awhile.
