From May 10-20th, 2022, New York City will come alive in a celebration of design for NYCxDESIGN’s 10th Anniversary. For a decade, the NYCxDESIGN Festival has been a focal event in the design circuit, showcasing innovation, creativity, community, and culture across the five boroughs. Thousands of design lovers – students, designers, architects, legacy brands, and companies – all flock to the city to explore what’s next in design. This year’s festivities are extra special and will highlight the creative spirit of New York with a program of activations, tours, exhibits, talks, workshops, and films. There is a lot to see, so be sure to visit festival.nycxdesign.org for the full interactive calendar. In the meantime, here are seven events we think you should definitely make room for in your itinerary:
There are two anchor events to NYCxDESIGN, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) and WantedDesign Manhattan. Both will be co-located at the Javits Convention Center from May 15-17. ICFF is a show we look to every year to discover new emerging designers, explore student work, and see the latest products from our favorite brands and designers. WantedDesign Manhattan will present high-end North American studios at Look Book and emerging international designers at the Launch Pad competition which will be juried by Design Milk’s very own Editorial Director Caroline Williamson.
We’re always supportive of activations centered on sustainability. In the bustling Midtown Manhattan CLB Architects will erect FILTER, a tactile, sustainable, renewable structure that will encourage visitors to stop, sit, and contemplate about their own carbon footprint. The installation will be on view from May 7-15.
Industry City, also known as Brooklyn’s Design District, kicks off its own Design Festival with an Opening Night of indoor/outdoor exhibits, live music performances, and local food and beverages. It’ll be a fun event!
Design can and has brought communities together with installations that enhance public spaces. NYCxDESIGN will unveil the winning two design installations from IMPACTxDESIGN, with support of Caesarstone. A ribbon ceremony will take place on May 10 for Karim Rashid’s own concept for Downtown Manhattan, followed by Kickie Chudikova’s design in DUMBO Brooklyn.
Floral artistry has evolved so much in the last few years. To celebrate its new flower guide, Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra will cohost “From Studio to Museum: A dive into the world of floral design” at The Museum of Arts and Design’s “Flower Craft” exhibition on May 14.
Did you know NYCxDESIGN has a podcast? On May 13, it will bring The Mic to a live audience for the first time ever at the Kohler Experience Center. Debbie Millman will be hosting the episode with Laura Kohler to chat about “The Responsibility of Design,” joined by design luminaries Claire Weisz, Suchi Reddy, Michael Chen, Jonathan Cropper, and Walei Sabry.
