A Serene Home Designed for a Restaurant Owner

Jon Mikulic, Newline Design’s founder, completed this house in the Richmond suburb of Melbourne, Australia for a local restaurant owner. The original house was built on a corner lot complete with several additions. Mikulic was tasked with designing a new family home that would have places for work, living, play, and art.

The design entailed creating an addition that would work with the original structure while also allowing for the new spaces and more flexibility.

Walls were opened in order to create connections between the kitchen, living room, dining room, and study, all while keeping a connection to the outdoors. Seeing the blue sky was critical to the design.

The ground level opens up by way of sliding glass doors so the living space blends right into the pool area.

I love their use of primary colors mixed with dark and light woods.
