Sharing Food is a Great Conversation Starter

Spring is here… Love is in the air… And with love comes sharing. At Pinch Food Design we have a slightly different definition of sharing.

1. A deliberate mingling aid in which an obviously incomplete component of a recognizable finger food is served to one guest while its complement is served to another guest.
2. A great incentive to socialize; an icebreaker, a conversation starter.

Similarly, the experimental Hungarian design workshop dombon-a-tanya created another way to share based on the origin of their informal word for “friend,” komatál.

The story goes, that in order to call someone your komatál, you must bring them a koma bowl filled with delicious goodies and share the spread together. Then this person must reciprocate the offering, and basta—you’re komotáls for life!

This old tradition inspired designers Anna Nagy Nora, Aniko Juasz, and Petra Hoffman to modernize and stylize the way we share food and drink with our friends.

Naturally, we wanted to share this clever balancing act of interactivity with you.
