Sibirjak: A Modern Lounge Chair Made of Birchbark

Using a decades old Siberian handcraft, Russian designer Anastasiya Koshcheeva created a modern lounge chair made from birchbark. Birchbark is a natural material that’s flexible, durable, and strong, while also being water-repellent and antibacterial.

Even though birchbark is so easy to use, it’s often overlooked. Koshcheeva decided to reinterpret the tradition into a modern technique by using it for the material of the Sibirjak chair and ottoman.

Koshcheeva combined the birchbark with a bold orange string that not only holds the material together, it gives it the modern touch it needs.
