Dutch designer Dik Scheepers has created the Sine Cabinet, a cabinet made of oak, PVC, and brass that comes with a story.
Most cabinets (and closets, sideboards, drawers, you name it) start out with items relatively in place and with some semblance of order. Over time, they turn into enormous catchalls for anything and everything and end up being messy storage boxes.
Prize possessions, and sometimes secrets, are tucked away behind closed doors and only occasionally do they see the light of day, like on the holidays when family is coming over. The idea behind Sine is much similar to that of these storage places, a cabinet that will change over time. The more contents that fill the shelves, the less you’ll be able to see through the PVC panels, which will cause it to lose its transparency.
The ribbed texture of the PVC reminds me of a shipping container.

What utter nonsense. IKEA had a cabinet just like this one a few years ago, nobody called that ‘art’. Guess why? Because they’re both cheap & ugly wardrobes! This one just has a blah story about change and transparency. Well, if you’re led on by that you deserve to be ripped off.

I wouldn´t go so far and call it nonesense, in fact I think its beautyful, but I agree that these plasticwalls are downright ugly. IKEA used similar but softer ones, I think these are for roofs and from a gardening or do-it-yourself market. Everybody who has already known these from this context can not possibly like them, really cheap stuff.
It occured to me that maybe planting, gardening was the primal inspiration, hence the boards, designed in a way excess water may pass.
I think the choice of material let this down, with, say, green milky glasswalls and solid brass boards this would be outstanding, the geometrical wooden structure is wonderfull already.

Hhhhmmmm……well, it says maybe too much about me, but I kinda like the cabinet. The ability to use these cheep, funky panels in a supposed to be nice object gets me excited about my own projects. And yep, people, including my wife, thinks they are just odd.
