Toeing the line between sculpture and furniture, French artist Martin Laforêt’s Variation series beckons viewers to get a closer look at the architectural and brutalist forms. Laforêt used a variety of casting techniques to create each individual form, and thus each one has their own unique set of characteristics and design expression. Cast concrete leaves behind details and textures that typically need to be refined and finished, especially when using molds, but Laforêt chooses to leave these details untouched. Referencing the art povera movement, he views the process and creative gesture of each chair to be more important than the final object.
