WantedDesign’s 2016 Launch Pad Winner: Tomnuk

This year’s Launch Pad at WantedDesign was full of amazing talent from around the world. The Launch Pad area is a special section at WantedDesign dedicated to independent designers and small companies, specifically those who are looking for exposure and/or manufacturers for their new products. We were proud to be Launch Pad sponsor alongside Design Within Reach.

I’m so proud to say that this year, it was very hard to choose a winner, but the jury (including me, Marva Griffin Wilshire, Giulio Cappellini, Massimo Zanatta, and Noah Schwarz) was unanimous in awarding Jordan Tomnuk, of Tomnuk Design, with the top prize for his circular lighting fixtures. Jordan Tomnuk is based in Edmonton, Canada and attended the University of Alberta, where he studied industrial design, along with printmaking and sculpture. Upon graduating in 2011, he created his own design studio, where he focuses on new designs for both his own product line and in collaboration with other manufacturers.

The winning collection consists of a pendant fixture and a wall sconce, both of the same geometry. The lights feature two discs, one of which can be rotated on its axis to control the amount of light that is emitted. All of the jury members and the WantedDesign team are excited to see how this series evolves and what Jordan does next.

Tomnuk will receive free booth space at WantedDesign in 2017 and at the WestEdge design fair in Los Angeles this November, a $2500 cash prize courtesy of Design Within Reach, an in person design meeting with DWR’s Director of Merchandising.
