06D Atelier + Russell Bamber Work Their Magic On Pegasus + Perseus

Pegasus, a mythical winged horse in Greek mythology, was foaled by the Gorgon Medusa upon her death. She was killed when the hero and slayer of monsters, Perseus, decapitated her. Pegasus and Perseus are also part of a metal furniture collection created in a collaboration between 06Atelier and Russell Bamber.

Italian designers Mauro Fragiotta and Francesca Adami make up 06D Atelier, and recall learning of Bamber. “The first time we saw Russell’s work we were impressed by how he plays with shapes and colors, creating playful and amazing small architectures recalling art’s minimalism and design’s post-modernism with a contemporary and pop reinterpretation. We couldn’t expect how he would work on our pieces, in fact the result couldn’t have been more amazing.”

Both tables are reinterpreted pieces of the Thinness Collection Matt Edition. Handcrafted in Italy, Bamber’s touch includes using his own technique of lamination that adds some unexpected color into the tables. Like the Thinness Collection, Pegasus and Perseus rely on dynamic lines made of ultra thin 2 to 3 mm thick steel plates that are folded, welded, ground, and finished by hand. The geometry of each table seems to almost defy gravity itself.

“I was delighted to have been invited by 06D Atelier to collaborate, redefine, and explore their beautiful Perseus Black Side Table and Pegasus Black Coffee Table. The initial simplicity of the creased and folded forms disguise the complexity of the design. This gave me the perfect opportunity to re-delineate the form, emphasize the planes, and exploit that simplicity,” Bamber shared. “My sculptures invigorate a space and bring an exciting and unexpected dynamism to the space they occupy.”
