Called “Louvers By Design”, this year’s winner is an installation of unique louvers made of LuciteLux® Frost in Glacier Green in a brand new home. The project was created by Elliott Rabin of ePlastics in collaboration with builder Jeff Kull of Jeff Kull Construction, and just so happens to be right around the corner from me in Point Loma, CA! I’m gonna have to do a drive-by one of these days…
Completed in late January 2014, this modern home started out with a basic louver design from the architect, who didn’t specify a material. General contractor, Jeff Kull, sought out ePlastics to see if there was a material that could achieve the objective of diffusing natural light coming into the first floor while allowing people on the second floor to see out to the ocean. It makes sense that they would naturally choose LuciteLux® Frost in Glacier Green, which mimics a color and feel of the ocean beyond. Not only is it beautiful, but also strong and durable enough to withstand extremes of temperature and all kinds of weather (Santa Ana winds!), particularly important because of its exposure and position.
Working with a local sheet metal fabricator, they created a custom frame for the louvers. “[LuciteLux®’s] thermoformability allowed it to be heated and wrapped around the aluminum frame in a controlled and uniform way, which avoided the risk of kinking or cracking. The expansion and contraction of acrylic worked well with the expansion and contraction of the aluminum frame to ensure a high quality finish to the structure.” Elliott explained.
One of the biggest challenges the team faced was installation. Using a lift, each louver was fitted in a particular order, using minimal hardware. Once installed, the louvers were firmly fixed. OK, so who else is ready to move in?
