Min-Kyu Choi has won the Brit Insurance Design of the Year with his folding plug. The standard UK electrical plug has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in 1947, and Choi was annoyed with carrying around the bulky plugs. Therefore, he designed a plug that folds down to just 10 mm.

They should actually make the sockets vertical with no need to unfold.

Why didn’t I think of that? lol! I love how a consumer’s annoyance and frustration with a product can lead to innovation like this. If you don’t like how something is why not redesign it yourself?!

The problem with making the socket verticle is that if implimented it creates the new problem of changing sockets all over. I live in a “developing” nation where the old, unsafe, round prong plugs are still in use and unfortunately the majority of the populatiuon here would not be able to afford new sockets and plugs if it were ever changed.
I do agree that a verticle plug and socket would be more efficient though. This is quite brilliant.
