Glass Prototypes by Daniele Fratarcangeli
Daniele Fratarcangeli is both a sculptor of glass and a teacher teaching his glass skills to others in San Diego, California. Each piece is handblown glass that is then mirrored on the interior to give it the reflective quality. Between the mirroring and the reflective quality of the glass, the pieces shine that much more.
101 Hotel Reykjavik in Iceland
For this month's Destination Design we fly up and over to Iceland (not really, we wish!) for a stay at the dramatic 101 Hotel Reykjavik. Situated in the heart of the city's historic district, the sleek design is a symphony of black and white, punctuated with cozy touches like the fireplace in the lounge, and old-fashioned freestanding tubs in some guest rooms. Contemporary art, from standing and crouching nudes of slightly indiscriminate gender to misty abstract canvases, dot the public spaces, lending an almost eerie feel to the cutting-edge design. As you've probably figured out by now, we're huge fans of boutique hotels that incorporate art galleries into the experience.
Four Corners Philly Exhibition
Last month I mentioned a great exhibition taking place during DesignPhiladelphia called Four Corners: Design from Philly Surrounds. I had the chance to check it out this past weekend and I would highly recommend if you're local to Philadelphia that you stop in to Minima Gallery before the exhibit ends on October 20th. If you can't make it, then here's a peek:
Ski Resort Cabin by h2o Architectes
h2o architectes managed to squeeze a whole lot of apartment into one small space in the most creative of ways in their recent project, The Cabin. Asked to redesign an apartment in a ski resort in Menuires, France, the team increased the bathrooms from one to two, found room to house eight beds, all while keeping the foot traffic separate. Now that was a tall order.
Recycled Pendant Lamps by Kelly Caruso
Designer Kelly Caruso is a recent grad with a degree in Furniture Design and Woodworking but it's her Recycled Pendant Lamps that really caught our attention. What began with a grant from her college to study "the application of recycled material in furniture design", led her down the path that she's now on and it's a good one.
BoConcept ISTRA Sofa with Klint Fabric Giveaway
BoConcept has re-launched a collection of mixed pattern fabrics designed by the Danish textile designer Vibeke Klint back in the 1950s called Klint and, to celebrate, they're giving away an ISTRA sofa (retail value: $2,889) in green Klint fabric! That's a pretty sweet giveaway if I might say so myself... in fact, I'm gonna be pretty jealous of whoever wins.
House with Pre-Cast Concrete Panels by Auerbach Halevy Architects
Israeli firm Auerbach Halevy Architects designed this unusual concrete house in a rural section of central Israel. The massive concrete monolith appears cold at first sight but then you notice the wood lattice that is inlaid in the facade. You also don't notice any windows on the front and sides, making your wonder if it's really a residence at all.
Colorful Interior Design by Fawn Galli
This week's CMYLK finds us creating Colourlovers palettes all over New York City. The rooms were created by interior designer Fawn Galli, mingles the old and the new, vintage and contemporary. Although schooled in political science, following a stint at Christie's auction house in the European furniture department, Galli learned the design trade in positions at renown architecture and design firms of Robert A.M. Stern and Peter Marino. We love her style, especially the colors.
Mid-Century Nelson-Inspired Laura Desk by Phloem Studio
Inspired by the lines of Shaker writing desks and the mid-century classic Swag desk by George Nelson, Ben Klebba of Phloem Studio designed the Laura Desk. The made-to-order desk has beautiful clean lines and handmade craftsmanship you won't find with most companies.
